Sustainable fuel for Easyjet flights
Added on Fri January 14th, 2022
Easyjet flights started to use a 30% blend of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel last October 2021. The fleet comprising a total of 42 flights will henceforth operate on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from Gatwick.
The final goal in aviation will be to achieve zero net CO2 emissions by 2050 and international aviation fuel suppliers Q8Aviation, easyJet, Gatwick Airport Ltd and Neste are working hard to achieve this target.
Thanks to the Easyjet operation, CO2 emissions will be reduced by up to 70 tonnes, but it is estimated that Neste’s sustainable aviation fuel can achieve up to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the use of fossil fuels.
The blend of Neste’s SAF fuel with A-1 jet fuel is created in a depot at Gatwick, generating a drop-in fuel compatible with existing aircraft engines through a system of hydrants.
Gatwick becomes the first airport in the UK that can reduce CO2 emissions by 18,000 kg per year.
These are the various statements of the partners involved in the venture:
Naser Ben Butain, Managing Director of Q8Aviation says he is very flattered to be the first sustainable fuel supplier for Easyjet at Gatwick; Jane Ashton, Sustainability Director of EasyJet, is pleased to announce that Easyjet is currently the only European airline most focused on offsetting fuel CO2 emissions; Tim Norwood, Director of Corporate Affairs, Planning and Sustainability at Gatwick Airport, is extremely pleased with the teamwork and determined to meet the zero net emissions challenge by 2050 by including airspace modernisation and innovation in aerospace technology, including electric, hydrogen and hybrid aircraft systems. Jonathan Wood, Vice President Europe, Renewable Aviation at Neste, welcomes the initiative of Easyjet and Gatwick Airport, encouraging other airlines and airports to move towards a more sustainable future for aviation. Duncan Storey, Vice President Supply Aviation Europe at World Fuel Services says he is willing to provide end-to-end solutions to as many airlines as possible from the point of view of sustainability.
